Op-amp (LM358)

What is this?

A small magnifying glass that compares two inputs and enlarges the difference; it makes a tiny difference obvious.

What is it for?

Amplifies a small sensor signal, or compares two voltages and answers yes or no.

Where do you see it?

In boards with sensors and in audio amplifiers.

How do you spot it?

A small black IC with eight legs in two rows; the type code is printed on top.

Caution:

Count the pins from the notched end; its output does not reach the full supply voltage.

Technical definition

A common IC containing two operational amplifiers (op-amps) in one package, able to run from a single supply. The input range includes ground (0 V), which makes it handy for sensor signals. Its output cannot quite reach the supply voltage.

Example part
LM358N (DIP-8)
Assuming it is rail-to-railOn a 5 V supply the output doesn't exceed ≈3.5 V. If you need the full 5 V, choose a rail-to-rail op-amp.
Forgetting the unused op-ampDo not leave the unused second op-amp floating; make it a voltage follower and tie its input to a fixed voltage (e.g. GND).
Expecting a fast signalA slow op-amp; at high gain it attenuates signals above a few kHz.

Test whether this part is good with the multimeter on the measurement screen.
